Who Remembers?
Do you remember the excitement of being handed your pay in a little brown envelope? For many of us in the 1970s and 80s, Friday was payday — and inside that envelope might have been carefully counted notes, coins, and a handwritten payslip showing the deductions. There was no checking an app, no bank alert, and certainly no tap-and-go. You could actually see what you had earned, hold it in your hand, and decide exactly what was going where.
It was a different time when cash stretched across the week for petrol, groceries, school needs and perhaps a night out with friends. Some of us handed part over to Mum and Dad for board, tucked a few dollars away for something special, or spent it far too quickly at the local shop. Looking back now, those little pay envelopes are a wonderful reminder of how much life has changed — but also of the simple pride of earning your own money.
